What Is the Difference Between a Chipboard Box and a Cardboard Box?

Two terms that are often confused: chipboard (rigid) box and cardboard box. In fact, they are products with different thickness, structure and purpose. Knowing this difference before ordering a box is critical for both cost and durability.

What is a cardboard box?

Cardboard is a single-layer, relatively thin (usually 200–600 g/m²) stiff paper material made from cellulose. When we say “cardboard box,” we think of:

  • Medicine boxes
  • Cosmetic outer packaging
  • Pizza boxes (corrugated)
  • Food packaging
  • Gift wraps (thin offset-printed)

Cardboard boxes are light, cheap and very suitable for printing, but their durability is limited.

What is a chipboard box?

Chipboard is a thick and rigid structure formed by gluing several layers together. Its thickness can range from 1 mm to 3 mm. Types include:

  • Grey chipboard — The frame of rigid (wrapped) boxes
  • Corrugated board — E-commerce and shipping boxes (wavy inner layer)
  • Coated/clay-coated chipboard — White on one side, high print quality

Chipboard boxes are durable, rigid, prestigious but more expensive.

Which should you choose?

Choose a cardboard box if:

  • Your product is light (cosmetics, food, small accessories)
  • You want high-volume, low-cost production
  • Shelf appearance is the priority

Choose a chipboard box if:

  • Your product is delicate (glass, jewellery, electronics)
  • Your brand wants to create a premium perception
  • The box should be a “keepable” object for a gift
  • It’s a cargo / e-commerce box (corrugated board)

Hybrid solutions are possible too

In some projects, a chipboard frame + coated cardboard wrap combines the advantages of both materials. This method is the basis of rigid (cloth-wrapped) boxes.
