What Is a Rigid (Cloth-Wrapped) Box and Where Is It Used?

A rigid box (also called a cloth-wrapped box) is a premium packaging type produced by wrapping book cloth, coated paper, faux leather or a special textured material around a thick chipboard frame, either by hand or machine. Thanks to its opening-and-closing feel, durability and visual quality, it is one of the most preferred box types for branded products.

How is it made?

The production process consists of these main steps:

1. Building the frame (body) — Thick grey chipboard, ranging from 1.5 mm to 3 mm, is cut and folded to the box dimensions.
2. Preparing the wrapping material — Book cloth, coated print paper, faux leather or kraft is printed to the brand’s specification; special finishes such as foil or embossing are applied here.
3. Wrapping (lamination) — The prepared material is glued onto the chipboard frame and the edges are cleanly closed.
4. Inner padding — Inserts such as suede, satin, EVA foam or chipboard dividers are placed to protect the product.
